Carpet Tile FAQs

If you’re new to carpet tiles, it’s natural to have questions. Here are answers to the ones we hear most often from homeowners.

How long do carpet tiles last?

With proper care, quality carpet tiles can last 10–20 years in residential settings. The lifespan depends on foot traffic, fiber quality, and how well you maintain them. Commercial-grade tiles (often used in offices) are designed for even longer life spans.

Can carpet tiles be installed in a basement?

Yes — in fact, carpet tiles are often a better choice than broadloom for basements. They’re easier to install on concrete, and if a section gets wet from flooding or condensation, you can lift and dry individual tiles (or replace them) rather than tearing out the whole floor. Look for tiles with moisture-resistant backing if your basement is prone to dampness.

Do carpet tiles need underlayment?

It depends on the tile. Many carpet tiles have cushion backing built in, so no separate underlayment is needed. Hard-back tiles may benefit from an underlayment for added comfort, but it’s not always required. Check the manufacturer’s recommendation for your specific product.

Can I install carpet tiles over existing flooring?

In many cases, yes. Carpet tiles can be installed over clean, flat, dry surfaces including concrete, hardwood, and vinyl. You should not install them over another layer of carpet or any surface with significant unevenness. Always check the adhesive manufacturer’s guidelines.

How do I stop carpet tile edges from curling?

Edge curling usually comes down to inadequate adhesive or acclimation. To prevent it: allow tiles to acclimate to room temperature for 24 hours before installing, use the correct adhesive for your subfloor type, and press tiles firmly into place with a hand roller after installation. If a tile does curl, lift it, re-apply adhesive, and re-press.

Are carpet tiles good for pet owners?

Yes — this is one of their strongest selling points for homeowners with pets. When a pet has an accident on a carpet tile, you can remove that tile, clean it thoroughly (or replace it), and reinstall. Pet odors that soak into broadloom are nearly impossible to fully eliminate, but with tiles, the problem area can be isolated and replaced.

Can I mix and match different carpet tile styles?

Absolutely. Mixing colors, textures, or patterns is one of the most fun design opportunities carpet tiles offer. Just make sure the tiles you mix have the same thickness and backing type so they lay flat at the same level.

What’s the best way to cut carpet tiles?

A sharp utility knife and a metal straightedge give the cleanest cuts. Score the back of the tile (not the face) in one firm pass, then snap it. Always use a fresh blade — dull blades tear fibers and make ragged cuts.

How much extra should I buy?

Order 10–15% more than your measured square footage. This accounts for cuts, waste, and pattern matching. It also gives you spares for future repairs — and tile dye lots can change, so matching later may be difficult.
