Frequently Asked Questions About LVP Flooring

Is LVP flooring really waterproof?

Yes — the planks themselves are 100% waterproof. LVP is made from synthetic materials that won’t swell, warp, or stain from moisture. However, the subfloor underneath is not waterproof. If water sits in the seams for extended periods, it can eventually reach the subfloor. Clean up standing water promptly and you’ll be fine.

Can LVP be installed in a bathroom or basement?

Absolutely. This is one of LVP’s biggest advantages over hardwood and laminate. It’s an excellent choice for bathrooms, laundry rooms, kitchens, and below-grade spaces like basements — anywhere moisture is a concern.

Can I install LVP over my existing floor?

Often yes, depending on what’s there. LVP can typically be installed over vinyl sheet, ceramic tile, and concrete as long as the surface is flat, clean, and secure. It generally should not go over carpet, cork, or existing floating floors. Always check your specific product’s guidelines.

How thick should my LVP be?

For most homes, 6mm–8mm is a solid middle ground. If your subfloor has minor imperfections, go thicker. For a premium feel underfoot and better sound dampening, look at 8mm–12mm options. Wear layer matters more for durability — aim for 12 mil or higher for active households.

Is LVP good for homes with pets?

Yes — it’s one of the best flooring choices for pet owners. LVP is scratch-resistant, waterproof (great for accidents), and easy to clean. Choose a product with a 20 mil or higher wear layer if you have large or active dogs.

Does LVP feel hollow or fake underfoot?

Thinner LVP (4mm–5mm) can feel hollow over some subfloors. Thicker planks (8mm+) and those with attached underlayment feel much more solid and realistic. If you can, walk on display samples in-store before purchasing.

Can LVP be installed over radiant heat?

Many LVP products are compatible with radiant heat systems, but not all. Check the manufacturer’s specs for maximum heat temperature tolerance (usually 80–85°F floor surface temp). SPC-core products tend to handle radiant heat better than WPC.

How long does LVP last?

Quality LVP can last 20–25 years or more with proper care. Wear layer thickness is the primary factor — a 20 mil wear layer will outlast a 6 mil one significantly in high-traffic areas.

Can LVP be refinished like hardwood?

No — LVP cannot be sanded or refinished. When the wear layer is fully worn down, the floor needs to be replaced. This is why investing in a thicker wear layer makes sense for busy areas.

Is LVP a good choice for resale value?

LVP adds more value than carpet and is well-regarded by buyers for its durability and appearance. While hardwood typically commands a higher premium, quality LVP is a smart investment that broad appeal to buyers.
